NBC Sports Tapped SnappyTV

NBC Sports selected SnappyTV's live cloud video production platform to provide viewers with instant highlights of the best moments from the NHL Winter Classic as they happened, from every angle, through NBCSports.com.

With 36 cameras throughout the stadium feeding SnappyTV’s cloud editing system, NBC’s video content creators were posting highlights seconds after they happened on the ice. Fans across the country were able to view these magical moments instantly with their friends and followers.

“SnappyTV provided our users near real-time access to the greatest highlights from this marquee event,” said Eric Black, Vice President of Technology for NBC Sports Group. “With the growth of multi-platform consumption, platforms like SnappyTV are essential to grow engagement.”

“NBC Sports has a commitment to high quality production and storytelling for premium content,” said Mike Folgner, CEO and Co-Founder of SnappyTV. “Our cloud production platform fits seamlessly into their production workflow, so their creative talent can easily connect with their audience while the technology and business logic just work.”

SnappyTV helped NBC Sports cut through the clutter of a busy sports day to bring all the pageantry and celebration of the NHL Winter Classic to a larger fan base.

Storytelling with GIFs

It’s no secret that here at SnappyTV we are fans of the animated GIF format – so much so that we’ve enhanced the format by adding interactivity through something we call a Snap Reel. We’ve seen the power of the format to engage audience and create conversations on social media. Beyond sharing individual animated GIFs to social, we love the idea of customers expanding their use of animated GIFs to tell a story with their content and integrate animated GIFs onto their sites to enhance their editorial coverage. As we’ve seen with the success of sites like BuzzFeed, this is a compelling format, albeit one that can be a bit overwhelming when you land on the story page.

With that in mind, we have made a few updates to the SnappyTV Snap Reel feature set to further empower our customers to animate away.

  • Embed code enhancements. With our update to allow for “no autoplay” in the Snap Reel embed code, customers can pick and choose what Snap Reels autoplay on the page and which ones wait for a user hover. Let your users be armchair analysts and interact with multiple Snap Reels without overwhelming the page with movement.

  • Animated GIF creation from VOD content. Have a great moment from a previously recorded event? Or want to engage your fans in a recap of a full season of great moments? You can now create animated GIFs from existing video content uploaded into the SnappyTV platform. This allows our customers to get the most out of their pre-recorded content and re-imagine their content in a new way.

Our friends over at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) are expert users of our SnappyTV Snap Reel tool and provide a showcase for using the tool to engage their fans. With our new features, they could take this a step further and bring the conversation to their site with a stacked display of all the best saves from the game, using autoplay to put emphasis on the first one, and let the fans weigh in on their favorites.

View on Twitter

And of course, the SnappyTV Snap Reel editor has all the bells and whistles needed to make entertaining GIFs:

  • Frame adjustment – determine the in and out points down to the second or a particular frame. This is particularly useful when showing off a close call for our sports customers.

  • Playback controls – Slow the GIF down or speed it up, determine the direction of the action, and loop the playback to produce the desired effect.

  • Branding – Include sponsor banners or a call to action to further increase the impact of the GIF

US Open brought to you by Heineken

It’s been great to follow all of the highlights of this year’s US Open in almost real-time. Follow @USOpen to see the highlight clips play inline on Twitter sponsored by Heineken.

Personally, following the bite sized highlights over the past couple of weeks has kept me engaged with this years tournament in a way that I never have experienced before. Throughout the day I see amazing plays that I have shared with friends and several times turned on the TV to tune-in. My twitter feed has been more interesting with the best plays of the day and I actually would like to thank Heineken for sponsoring this. Their ads are short and well executed. Good job. It may be a 6 pack of Heineken type of weekend.

The Official Beer Mile World Classic on Treasure Island

Beer Mile World Classic On Tap for San Francisco

Still buzzing from two new world records set on August 7, the wacky world of beer mile running turns its attention next to the inaugural Beer Mile World Classic in San Francisco on August 22.

The suds-centric event, which is described like “Christmas Morning, the Super Bowl, and your first basement makeout session all rolled into one” by Beermile.com, the recognized authority on the sport, will take place at Treasure Island, a small island between San Francisco and Oakland dotted with warehouses.

I made the trophies and they turned out quite nice.

Adweek - Twitter Powers Social Video

The U.S. Open will tweet real-time clips of exciting moments from the tennis courts by employing Snappy TV’s video-publishing tools. Twitter has been partnering with SnappyTV for months to create video-based marketing opportunities during big sporting events such as March Madness. “The videos will be highlights we see trending in social,” said Nicole Jeter West, USTA’s digital strategy lead. “They will be snapped near-live.”

American Idol Solution

The Challenge

American Idol wanted a way to publish clips to social media while the show is still happening and encourage live tune-in. Their previous solution required hours for clips to be created and published meaning the show was over once the clips could be shared.

The Solution

They used the LiveCut Editor to create clips in real-time and publish to social media.
They posted highlights to AmericanIdol.com,  Facebook and Twitter profiles, allowing fans to watch and share highlights as the event aired live. SnappyTV provided a solution to achieve this full  brand integration.

The Results

American Idol reduced the time required to push clips to web and social channels. LiveCut Editor’s ease of use enabled PR and Marketing teams to make and share clips without having to involve editors. They were able to brand all of their clips with tune-in banners to reach their fans on all screens.

Cool Interactive GIFs of Spiderman

One of the things I am proud of is building our interactive GIF solution and here are a couple of reasons why. First, they are just so fun to play and interact with. Whether it is a dunk, touchdown or Spiderman doing flips, it is just fun to scrub your finger or mouse back and forth over it because you are in control. There is no audio of course so it's up to the viewer to make their own sound effects and trust me people do. A second reason these are awesome is that they play inline on Facebook and Twitter. How is that possible when neither of those playback Animated GIFs. Well the reason is that these are not actually GIFs. They are a series of images that will play inline and will be interactive. I admit that we used to make these in flash way back in 1999 at Quokka Sports, so the idea is not new. It's simply a classic and still fun as  ever.

The new Spiderman Movie is coming soon and they shared some amazing Interactive GIFs during the Super Bowl. We are big fans … nicely done.
